GRIDSERVE Begins Building UK’s First Public Electric HGV Charging Hubs

A Key Step in Decarbonising Road Freight

GRIDSERVE has started construction on the UK’s first publicly accessible charging hubs for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), marking a significant development in the transition to cleaner freight transport. These first two hubs are part of a wider national network planned under the company’s Electric Freightway programme.

Why This Matters

Road freight accounts for a large share of transport emissions, and eHGV adoption has been slow due to the lack of charging infrastructure. Providing reliable, high-power charging hubs at key locations will help fleet operators transition from diesel, cut carbon emissions and reduce operating costs while supporting the Government’s ambition to decarbonise heavy-duty transport over the coming decade.

Where The First Hubs Are Going Live

Construction is now underway at two strategic motorway service areas:

  • Extra Baldock, at Junction 10 of the A1(M)
  • Moto Exeter, at Junction 30 of the M5

Both locations will feature multiple high-power drive-through charging bays, accommodating all truck types regardless of where their charging port is positioned.

To support safety and usability, enhanced signage and road markings will be installed, and proposals include improved lighting, walkways, sensors and CCTV so drivers can move between vehicles, chargers and facilities securely.

What Electric Freightway Means For The Sector

Electric Freightway is designed to do for heavy trucks what GRIDSERVE’s Electric Highway has done for cars: lay the foundations for a robust, nationwide charging ecosystem. By making public charging accessible at key motorway locations, the programme supports long-distance eHGV operations and helps logistics operators plan routes with confidence.

The first hubs were scheduled to open in December 2025, providing much-needed infrastructure as more operators begin electrifying their fleets.
