ISO 9001:2026 has now been published, marking the first major revision to the Quality Management System standard since 2015. This is an evolution, not a rebuild. For most organisations, the existing structure of their QMS will remain relevant, with changes focused on refinement, greater clarity and strengthening key areas.
What The Revision Signals
The revision places greater emphasis on how quality is embedded within the organisation, with clearer expectations around leadership, quality culture, ethical behaviour and opportunity-based thinking. There is also greater clarity throughout the standard to support more consistent interpretation and easier integration with other ISO management systems.
Quality Culture & Leadership
One of the significant changes is the clearer expectation for leadership to promote quality culture and ethical behaviour.
Organisations will need to demonstrate how leadership establishes and reinforces behaviours that support quality. This could be reflected through existing activities such as leadership communication, employee engagement, competence and induction, reporting of problems and nonconformities, lessons learned and management review.
Risks & Opportunities
The revision gives greater prominence to opportunities, creating a clearer distinction between risks and opportunities within the planning process.
For organisations that have historically focused heavily on their risk register, this may require a closer look at how opportunities are identified and acted upon. These could include process improvements, new technology, supplier enhancements, customer feedback, skills development or efficiency gains.
A separate opportunity register isn’t necessarily required, but organisations should be able to demonstrate opportunity-based thinking, rather than simply identifying risks.
Climate Change & Context
The climate change considerations introduced in the 2024 amendment are incorporated into the revised standard, reinforcing the need to consider external issues and interested party expectations when determining the context of the QMS.
For organisations that have already addressed the 2024 amendment, this should largely be a matter of ensuring these considerations remain appropriately integrated.
Next Steps
Preparation should be proportionate. Most organisations should focus on:
🔎 Reviewing how leadership promotes quality culture and ethical behaviour
📋 Checking how risks and opportunities are identified and addressed
💡 Ensuring opportunities for improvement are actively considered
🌍 Reviewing organisational context and climate change considerations
