The UK Government has published its first UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS), creating a common framework for organisations to report sustainability and climate-related risks, opportunities and performance. Based on the internationally recognised ISSB standards, the aim is to improve the consistency and transparency of sustainability reporting across UK businesses.
What’s Been Introduced
Two standards have been introduced:
- UK SRS S1 – covering sustainability-related risks and opportunities that may impact business performance.
- UK SRS S2 – focusing specifically on climate-related risks, opportunities and disclosures.
Together, they provide a framework for reporting how sustainability issues influence business strategy, governance, risk management and decision-making.
What This Means For Businesses
Although many organisations will not be required to report immediately, sustainability reporting expectations are already increasing.
Customers, investors, procurement teams and supply chain partners are seeking greater transparency around environmental performance and how organisations manage sustainability-related risks.
Businesses that are prepared will be better positioned to:
✅ Meet customer and stakeholder expectations
✅ Respond to supply chain reporting requests
✅ Strengthen governance and risk management
✅ Demonstrate environmental performance and progress
✅ Prepare for future regulatory requirements
✅ Enhance ESG values and reporting practices
A Clear Direction For The Future
While reporting is currently voluntary, the publication of UK SRS provides a clear indication of where regulatory and stakeholder expectations are heading. Businesses that understand and prepare for these requirements now will be better placed to respond to future reporting obligations and increasing demands from customers, investors and supply chains.
Preparing For The Future
Now is a good opportunity to review whether your organisation has the foundations in place to support future sustainability reporting expectations.
This may include:
- Reviewing environmental and sustainability data currently being collected.
- Identifying key environmental and climate-related risks.
- Strengthening governance and reporting processes.
- Aligning sustainability objectives with existing management systems.
- Ensuring performance data can be measured, monitored and evidenced.
