Proposed ISO 14060 Net-Zero Standard Fails Initial Vote

The proposed ISO 14060 standard for net-zero transition has failed to secure the approval needed to progress in its current form. The standard is being developed to provide organisations with a consistent framework for developing and implementing net-zero strategies, including targets, transition plans and actions.

Significant Stakeholder Feedback

The draft attracted significant attention during its 12-week consultation, receiving almost 5,000 comments from stakeholders around the world. Following the consultation, the draft failed to receive the required level of approval from ISO members and will now be returned for further consideration and revision.

This does not mean ISO 14060 has been abandoned. The feedback received during the consultation will be considered as the standard is revised, meaning further changes to the proposed requirements are possible before it progresses.

Looking Ahead

There is no immediate new requirement for businesses to act as a result of the vote. However, the outcome highlights that the international approach to net-zero planning and reporting continues to evolve.

Organisations should continue to work with the standards and guidance currently applicable to their activities, rather than waiting for ISO 14060 to be finalised.

As the draft develops, its eventual requirements could provide organisations with a more consistent international framework for setting and implementing net-zero strategies and targets.
