The Environment Agency has published its latest update on packaging producer responsibility compliance, placing greater responsibility on producers to manage the environmental impact of their packaging.
Alongside ongoing Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) requirements, businesses should also begin preparing for the Government’s new Digital Waste Tracking service. Together, these changes represent a significant shift in how organisations manage environmental compliance and demonstrate responsible resource management.
Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR)
The pEPR regime is placing greater responsibility on packaging producers, with new reporting obligations and increased financial accountability for managing packaging waste. Compliance is no longer just about submitting packaging data, it’s about ensuring the information is accurate, complete and supported by robust internal processes.
The Environment Agency is continuing to take an intelligence-led, risk-based approach to compliance, including greater scrutiny of packaging data, closer monitoring of producer registrations and reporting submissions and enforcement action for businesses that fail to comply.
Further changes are also on the horizon, with future fees expected to be influenced by how recyclable packaging is, making it increasingly important for businesses to understand the environmental impact of the packaging they use.

Digital Waste Tracking
The Government’s Digital Waste Tracking service continues to progress, with the phased rollout now underway. The new system will eventually replace paper-based waste transfer notes with a single digital platform, improving traceability across the waste chain and changing how organisations record and report waste movements.
As regulatory requirements continue to evolve, it is important that businesses understand their obligations and ensure they have appropriate processes in place. Failure to comply with environmental legislation can lead to financial penalties, regulatory intervention and reputational damage.
